chinchero, SALT FLATS & MORAy

On the way to the Sacred Valley, these three attractions are unmissable.

Among the wilder Incan sites is the impressively deep amphitheater - like terracing of Moray, is a fascinating spectacle.

There is no better way to understand how salt is produced than visiting the salt mines of Maras, active from the Inca times until our days.

SERVICE HOURS

 08:30 to 14:30 hrs.

PLACES VISITED

⟩ Chinchero's market and chapel
⟩ Rings of Moray
⟩ Salt Flats of Maras

We'll take you from the hotel to start our trip at around 08:30 in the morning taking the route to the Sacred Valley to first stop in Chinchero which is a town that combines Inca ruins with a colonial church, come wonderful mountain views and colorful market. A bit further we start going through crops and fields towards our next destinations. In the town of Chinchero you'll find the Church of Our Lady of Monserrat built in 1607. On the Tupac Yupanqui palace, we will also see “Inca Andenes” and its market of artisans.

After an about 30 minute ride from Chinchero, we'll get to Moray, a huge display of ring shaped terraces will catch your attention. These terraces, which are carved deep into the earth in a bowl shape, were thought to be used to determine the optimal conditions for growing crops. There are three amphitheater-like terraces made by the Incas around the area. Different levels of concentric terraces are carved into a huge earthen bowl, each layer of which apparently has his own microclimate, according to how deep into the bowl it is. The farming rings of Moray are stunningly perfect , a greatness you'll always remember.

After our visit to Moray, we now get to Maras to visit the salt flats or salt mines where its habitants continue taking advantage of the salty water. An association of the villagers gives all of them the opportunity to trade souvenirs and handmade sculptures made of salt. The landscape of about 4000 flats can be seen from the top of the place. Later on we'll go back to Cusco and leave you at your hotel.

PLACES VISITED

⟩ Awana Kancha andean weaving centre
⟩ Archeological Site of Pisac
⟩ Town market of Pisac
⟩ Town of Urubamba (Stop for lunch)

This tour starts at around 7:30 a.m., we will pick you up from the hotel in Cusco 15 to 20 minutes before the tour take off, we will start visiting Awana Kancha centre where you can see the weaving process and have a close encounter with native animals, being the South American camelids such as llamas and alpacas.

Next stop is the Archaeological Site of Pisac located 45 minutes from Cusco. Pisac will give you an idea of the advanced knowledge that the Incas achieved in architecture. Composed of platforms, domestic structures, ceremonials and aqueducts that provided water for the agro-business operation. Another good reason to visit Pisac is its craft market, where you can find some unique and authentic souvenirs.

At noon, we will go to the town of Urubamba where we will enjoy the buffet lunch that will allow you to enjoy the delicious Peruvian cuisine. Urubamba was one of the main agricultural centers of the Empire of the Incas. Currently, the villagers harvest the best corn in the world, and in the rainy season, the Valley’s own fruits are abundant, such as peaches, capulí, strawberries of the highest quality, among others.

Later in the afternoon, we will visit the Ollantaytambo fortress that was built to be a strategic military, agricultural and religious center to administer and control the Sacred Valley of the Incas; historians figured this out due to the constructions, which presumably were used as agricultural deposits and for military uses like walls and watchtowers. This archaeological site comprises a series of overlapping terraces, showing the impressive and large stone blocks finely carved and located on the upper terrace.

The tour of the Sacred Valley ends in Cusco at around 18:30 hours. Upon our arrival in Cusco, we will leave you close by the Main Square (Plaza de Armas). Our private services will take you from and back to our hotel Antigua Cason San Blas.

PLACES VISITED

⟩ Archeological irrigation system of Tipon
⟩ Archeological site of Piquillacta.
⟩ Sistine Chapel of America of Andahuaylillas.

The pick up time from the hotel is around 9:00 a.m. and we drive in our private van towards our destination. We'll visit the Saint Peter church of Andahuaylillas, considered as the “Sistine Chapel of America". It was built by the Order of the Jesuits at the end of the 16th century. Its architectural structure is typical for village churches. Its walls are wide like all the colonial buildings, made of sun-dried mud-bricks also known as adobe, the facade is decorated with magnificent murals, and two large stone columns at the main entrance. The decoration of its interior is unique and impressive. We can first mention a picture of the “Assumption of the Virgin,” painted by the Spanish historical painter Esteban Murillo.

We'll also visit Piquillacta, it is the only pre-Incan site of importance near Cusco. The Huari culture built the complex, a huge ceremonial center. The two-story adobe buildings, of rather rudimentary masonry, aren't in partiularly good shape, although they are surrounded by a defensive wall.

Our journey also includes the spectacular archaeological site of Tipon, where we will see the best of Inca hydraulic water work system. There are also baths, atemple complex, and irrigation canals and aqueducts that further reveal the engineering prowess of the Incas. On the way back from Tipon, you'll be able to go through the restaurants that serve a magnificent guinea pig, an adventurous dish to taste.
